Grip-Tite® Certified Installers Serving Both Sides of the River

When a foundation is settling or a basement wall is bowing in, patching the cracks won’t hold. The fix is structural: steel piers that carry the house down to stable soil, or wall anchors that hold a leaning wall in place. Tomlinson Cannon installs both across the Quad Cities, from Davenport and Bettendorf to Moline and Rock Island. This page covers the piering and anchoring systems we use. For the full range of services, see our main page on foundation repair in the Quad Cities.

When Does a Home Need Piers or Wall Anchors?

Quad Cities clay soils swell when wet and shrink when dry, and our freeze-thaw winters add pressure every season. Over time that movement shows up as:

  • Cracks in brickwork or basement walls, including stair-step cracks in block
  • Bowing or bulging foundation walls
  • Gaps around windows and doors, or doors that stick
  • Sloping floors or a corner of the house that has dropped
  • Uneven or sinking concrete slabs

Settling usually calls for piers. Inward bowing usually calls for wall anchors. A free inspection tells you which one you need, or whether you need both.

Helical Piers

Helical piers are steel shafts with screw-like plates. They are turned into the ground beneath the footing until they reach load-bearing soil, and the weight of the home is then transferred onto them. That stops further settling and, in many cases, lets us lift the structure back toward level. Installation needs minimal excavation, and helical piers work under additions, porches and lighter structures as well as full homes.

Push Piers

Push piers are steel sections driven down beneath the footing, using the weight of the house as resistance. They suit heavier structures where load-bearing soil lies deeper. As with helical piers, the goal is permanent support on stable ground instead of on the shifting soil near the surface.

Wall Anchors for Bowing Basement Walls

When soil pressure pushes a block or poured basement wall inward, wall anchors stabilize it. An anchor is set in stable soil out in the yard and connected by a steel rod to a plate on the inside of the wall. Tightening the rod holds the wall in place and, over time, can draw it back toward plumb. It is a proven repair for older Quad Cities homes with block foundations, and it needs far less digging than rebuilding the wall.

How a Pier or Anchor Project Works

  1. Free inspection. We look at the cracks, check floor and wall movement, and explain in plain language what’s going on.
  2. A plan that fits the house. Piers, anchors or a combination, matched to your home’s age, structure and soil.
  3. Clean, efficient installation. Our crews show up on time, protect your property and get the job done.
  4. Support that stays local. We’ve been helping Quad Cities families since 1948, and we’ll be here if you need us.

Foundation movement often comes with water problems or sunken concrete. If that’s your situation, see basement waterproofing in the Quad Cities or concrete leveling. Still comparing companies? Read our guide on how to choose a foundation repair contractor.
