Foundation Repair / Waterproofing
Why are there cracks in my foundation?
There are 4 leading causes to a cracked foundation.
1. Some poured walls may experience what is called a shrinkage crack, which is related to the loss of moisture content of the poured cement.
2. Inward movement, which is caused by hydrostatic pressure, or water weight, pushing inward on the foundation wall causing it to bow, tip, or sheer inward.
3. Trauma, which is related to an isolated event, briefly causing stress on the foundation wall, such as a tree falling against the foundation wall or a large, heavy object striking the foundation.
4. Settlement, which is when the load bearing soils fail beneath the foundation, giving way and allowing the weight of the foundation to sink.
My Foundation is cracked - what is causing this? What are the solutions?
Soil movement/ settlement, hydrostatic pressure, poor drainage, tree roots, temperature changes, and sometimes poor construction. Our trained team can quote solutions like crack sealing, wall reinforcement, or pier installation.
I have a wet basement- what is causing this? What are the solutions?
Poor exterior drainage, hydrostatic pressure, cracks in foundation walls or floor, and no or ineffective drain tile system. Typically, the best fix is to install an interior drain tile system with a sump pump.
Concrete Leveling
My concrete is cracked and settled. Do I need to replace it?
You may not need to replace the slab if:
- The settling is moderate and the slab is mostly intact.
- The cracks are non-structural (e.g., in a driveway, sidewalk, or patio).
- The concrete hasn’t crumbled or broken into multiple pieces.
What is the difference between Mudjacking and Polyjacking?
These techniques lift and level the sunken concrete by injecting material beneath it:
- Mudjacking uses a slurry (cement, soil, water) to lift the slab.
- Polyjacking uses expanding polyurethane foam which faster-curing and uses smaller injection holes
- Both methods are far less expensive and less invasive than tearing out and replacing concrete.
- After lifting, cracks can be sealed to prevent moisture intrusion and further damage.
Roof
What are signs my roof needs to be replaced?
Missing shingles, wet spots or leaks on your ceiling, exposed roofing nails, shingles are peeling up, loss of “shingle grit”, black streaking, algae growth, brittle shingles, soft areas or waviness are all signs your roof needs attention.
What type of roof warranty do you offer?
Tomlinson Cannon uses Owens Corning Duration shingles. As a preferred contractor we include an exclusive limited-lifetime warranty featuring:
- First 10 years: Full coverage from workmanship
- First 15 years: Blow off coverage up to 130 MPH
- First 25 years: Algae staining resistance
- First 50 years: Full coverage for material defects
What is the difference between a Class 3 and Class 4 Shingle?
We offer both depending on the customer’s budget and needs. Class 4 is the highest impact resistance rating that a shingle can receive which will withstand larger and more severe hail storms than a class 3.
What does the typical roof replacement cost?
Cost all depends on size, complexity of your roof and type of roofing. Most homes with shingles can be reroofed between $10,000-$20,000. We give free estimates, work with any insurance company, and offer financing options.
Gutters
What is the difference between standard and oversized residential gutters?
Standard gutters are 5″ wide and oversized gutters are 6″ wide. Oversized gutters handle nearly double the volume of water. This higher capacity gives your downspouts more time to drain water before the gutter overflows in heavy rains. All gutter systems have a limit for capacity and all can overflow. The larger the system, the less likely it will overflow. Larger systems also accommodate the largest downspout options.
Do gutter guards work?
Yes, if the proper gutter guard is selected and installed properly. Homeowners that have a bad experience with gutter guards can typically be attributed to the wrong product and/or poor installation. The gutter guard must be selected to filter out the particular debris that is clogging your gutters. Pine trees need a different solution than maple trees, for instance. The guards must be properly installed – securely affixed to the gutter, totally enclosing the gutter from birds and pests, and with a forward slope to aid in debris washing off. All of our guards are made of heavy duty material that will not rust or corrode over time. All gutter guards require some routine maintenance to clean off build up of stubborn debris – but this minor maintenance is a better alternative to allowing the debris to clog your downspouts.
